ABSTRACT
@EN Oxidative stress is associated with aging and various pathologic states such as diabetes mellitus, infection, cancer and so on. Lipid peroxidation, one expression of oxidative stress, is also related to these conditions. It is studied amply
that
lipid peroxidation is correlated with hyperglycemia and the occurrence of complications in diabetic patients. Lipid peroxidation is related with aging in healthy men. There is no study about the interrelation between aging and lipid peroxidation
in
diabetic patients.
To investigate the effect of aging and hyperglycemia in diabetic patients, we studied red blood cell membrane lipid peroxidation, plasma glucose level and glycosylated hemoglobin value in admitted 69 diabetic patients, who were grouped by age.
Red
blood
cell membrane lipid peroxidation was measured by TBA method.
The results revealed that red blood cell membrane lipid peroxidation is significantly correlated with aging in diabetic patients (r=0.37, p<0.01). The correlationship is more pronounced in 55 year or more old patients. It is suggested that age
factor is
one of variable to be considered in the interpretation of red blood cell membrane lipid peroxidation in diabetic patients (J Kor Soc Endocrinol 8:281~286, 1993)
